Our timpani - instruments so vital to an orchestra that they are often referred to as its "backbone" - are more than 55-years old and were in extremely frail condition. In October 2007, the NHSO launched its 2008 Percussion Repair Appeal as a means to rehabilitate these essential pieces and return them to their former roaring splendor.

MLK Concert a Resounding Success |

The NHSO, The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven,Target and the Westfield Mall teamed up for a celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr at the Connecticut Post Mall in Milford Saturday, January 19, 2008.
Approximately 1,000 shoppers of all ages stopped to see the NHSO and choirs from Jonathon Law and Foran High Schools as they performed such inspiring classics as "Amazing Grace," "We Shall Overcome," and "The Storm is Passing Over". The music was conducted by Dr. Charles Garner, a noted organist, educator, composer, and retired Professor and Head of the Department of Music at Southern Connecticut State University.

Family Concert at the Omni Hotel, February 16 |
The NHSO brass quintet will recycle familiar classical themes including Dukas' Fanfare, Handel's Water Music, Verdi's Aida, Jobim's Wave, and Bach's Contrapunctus IX. Additionally, the group will perform a composition on instruments made from recycled household materials. "Recycle, Reuse, Rejoice will be an engaging, interactive, and fun event for the entire family," says Steve Collins, Education Director of the NHSO.
The interactive tone will be set throughout the day beginning with the pre-concert activities at 1:30pm, and concert at 2pm. Children will have the opportunity to meet the musicians and play various brass instruments. Children will also be treated to "Recycling is Magic" a magic show presented by Cyril May of the Yale Recycling Center. His act educates children about recycling and the enviroment through magic and story.
